Sirius Sunday: It’s Talk Like a Robot Day!
Written by Rose - March 7, 2010 2 CommentsIt is Unofficial Talk Like a Robot Day. Now you know, and cannot plead ignorance as an excuse.
There are many different kinds of robots. You are now one of those kinds. Make soft whirring noises when your brain is put into overdrive. Turn to the humanoid beside you and tell them that their programming is especially fluid. Sit with your head tilted slightly to the side and follow every moving thing with your eyes. Don’t forget to blink occasionally to ensure that you do not make the sapiens nervous.
Why . . .?
I got to watch the music video to the Flight of the Concord’s Robot Song. The song was compelling. It occurred to me that robots are cool. And, being cool myself, I wondered whether Rose and roboticness were compatible.
Wondering yielded only partial certainty. To increase verifiability of test, Operation Talk Like A Robot Day was enacted. So far, it has been found that Rose does not make a convincing robot.
That makes TLARD a success!
Today begins your time of Taking Control of Life. You are a sentient and at least mostly-autonomous being. Perhaps it is time to start acting like it. You are the only one who can make your life productive. Today is the first day of the rest of your life, the saying goes, but the truth is that today is really the last day of your old life. End well! You’re worth a positive change. Believe that, make the choice to improve, and then live it out.
All that to say, I’m experimenting with the idea of living like a machine. Structure, responsive programming, an emotionless approach to duty and others . . . why not? Even if TLARD flops, an experiment that teaches me about my limitations is twice as good as one that shows me what I already know about myself.
A Week in Review
Monday. The humans are capable of great reasoning and logic. We are capable of even greater wisdom and good sense. Edit your life, simplify the code of your existence, and be the best artificial life form you can be. Even humans can learn from Steph’s advice. Check it out. Tell me you aren’t a better personoid for it.
Thursday. More PHP brilliance from Allison! We thought we knew what words like “for” and “while” were good for. We were partially wrong. Allison has showed us a better way, the coder’s way, and these words will never be the same again. Allison has also promised to begin the coding of our own program. We will be having cousins!
Sadly, this week also marked the end of February and Sirius’ 10%-off-your-ebook deal. We’ve had a lot of fun getting to work with the people who took advantage of the bargain, and we hope that the rest of you don’t wait until next February to start thinking about getting your ebook out there. Talk to us, humanoids and fellow robots. We’ll always listen.
Do Something!
If you’re scratching your head and trying to figure out why this update has been less coherent than a three-year-old’s rendition of Star Wars (oh, the things that make us laugh when we are tired), just remember this; we’re not robots.
*gasp* Secret revealed! (I think I was losing the robot voice anyway. Must . . . work . . . harder . . .)
But Siriusly. We’re not robots, we don’t run on electricity, and if you’ve ever tried to teach a little kid (*coughAllisoncough*) manners, then you know as well as we do that humans are impossible to program.
But, hey, meet Sirius! We’re quirky and unique and talented and full of exuberance, and that makes us valuable. Sirius Graphix isn’t just another design company; we’re a team of talented designers, writers, editors, and coders who can bring our personal pizazz to anything we touch.
It’s Talk Like a Robot Day for Rose (since it’s Sunday I don’t have to worry about avoiding my supervisor. Woohoo!), but it doesn’t (just) have to be Laugh at Rose for Talking Like a Robot Day for you. Pick a theme, pick an image, pick a goal, pick a metaphor that makes you pause and think—and then live it! Any one of us on the Sirius Graphix team can tell you that making positive change in your life doesn’t have to be dull. If you’re bold and brave enough to want to be a better person, then take all that potential for greatness wrapped up inside of you and do it. Be a robot! Be a rockstar! Be a dragon!
Just hold off on the fire-breathing until you get home from work. Then call a party, and invite Sirius to the show. We want to be there to see the fireworks.

I’m getting psyched about seeing hints of green and the melting of snow. I’m ready for the Green Leprechaun of St. Patrick’s day to herald in the bright vivid colors of spring.
Should I choose Talk Like a Leprechaun day?
Does anyone know what they sound like?

Irish accent, Wendi. Slur a little (because what Irishman–er, leprechaun–isn’t always a little drunk?) Add a pinch of mischief, maybe a freckle of sinister intent . . . I think you could do a rather spot-on leprechaun.
