Sirius Sunday: What Gets You Going?

Medals

Life is full of opportunities. It’s a shame we’re so good at missing them.” -Rose

(Is it lame to quote myself? Sometimes I just get choked up over how pithy I am. Rebuke me if that’s pathetic… but do it kindly, eh? The Ides of March approacheth . . .)

On Wednesday night I went to see a play, The Seagull by Anton Chekhov, and I left it feeling horribly depressed about the depravity of humanity. It’s kind of a depressing play. On the way home I stopped by a friend’s house in search of redemption (and food, to be truthful) and ended up joining her in watching the Olympics for a while.

I left half an hour later feeling like a freshly-inflated helium balloon. Speed skating was on!

Now, I’m an American and proud of it, but my new hero is Martina Sablikova, the Czech skater who won Olympic gold in the 3000 meter. You have to see this woman in motion (take a peek at our sidebar). She’s 22 years old, 5.7, 115 pounds, and she moves on the ice like a swan on jet fuel. It was beautiful! Some people get inspired by sunsets and snowy fields; I’m happiest when watching humans in motion.

So now it’s your turn to ask yourself; what gets you going? Know thyself, and you’ll know how to make sure that you stay on top of your game.

Sirius Inspirations

Monday’s Post gave us Five Easy Ways to Make Your Writing Better. Too lazy to go read it yourself? Let me recap:

  1. Write your title first.
  2. Keep your writing simple.
  3. Curb the length of your sentences and paragraphs.
  4. Watch the total length of your ebook or post.
  5. Read your writing aloud.

And those are just the headings! Don’t miss out on Steph’s wisdom. Really.

On Wednesday Deb asked a very important question: Does size matter? The conclusion we came to was that yes, actually, it does, but that more important than dimension is one’s intentionality about how that acreage is being used.

Monitors, friends. We’re talking monitors.

It’s a great article; I highly advise checking it out. The comments on that post are hilarious, too. Thanks for being such an awesome group of readers; I know for a fact that it’s y’all who make the writing worthwhile.

Thursday brought another fine foray into the land of PHP with Allison. I’ll bet she’s one of a very few writing coders who can talk loops without making her readers dizzy. The article’s short, sweet, and straight to the point–no talking in circles from our coder (Ha ha ha . . . sorry. You wouldn’t be able to resist either).

Not to mention that there was talk of homemade cookies. The talk alone is enough to make a monk drool, but if you’ve never had a homemade Allison cookie . . . well. Mm. they make me think I need a cold shower.

Speaking of cold showers, if Wendi’s post from Friday didn’t make you want to jump up and start a revolution, you need to read it again. Down with mediated relationships! Down with the virus of false intimacy! Down with insisting on immediate gratification at the sacrifice of quality!

(Down, Rose. Sit. Good girl.)

Phew.  Life’s a busy little bugger, and if you’re not careful the great things out there are going to pass you right by. Get your head out of the sand, look out through your cubicle’s window, glance up from that killer project that has to be finished by yesterday, and don’t miss out on the great people and opportunities that are waiting at your fingertips. Make today the day you do something Siriusly great.

(You liked that one. Admit it.)

And Don’t Forget the Olympics!

Come on, people! It doesn’t even matter where you’re from or how your homeland is doing in the medal runnings.  If you’re reading this, it means you have a computer and internet and access to some great footage of humanity doing some awesome stuff.

Watch, wonder, and then do something awesome yourself.

One Outstanding Response to "Sirius Sunday: What Gets You Going?"

    Rose,

Your Sunday recaps may very well be my favorite part of the week ( don’t tell the others, I don’t want them to feel bad) You make us sound so darn good, even I want to go read to read Friday again and I wrote it! How silly is that! I want to read the whole week over!

You bring a lot of fun and sunshine to your recaps. Hurray for Siriusly Sunday, it’s a gold medal in my book!
